The last of two FL9s still on the roster sits in the Albany yard in 2002 on a damp day among a snow jet and Amfleet cars. If you look closely you can see the RTG II Turboliner in the background.

Things you don't see anymore -- a turbo set and an FL9 share the shop tracks at Amtrak's facility in Rensselaer. The shop serves Amtrak's Empire Service trains along the Hudson and to points west.

On a snowless late winter afternoon, Amtrak FL9 485 leads the northbound Adirondack into Croton-Harmon station.

New Meets Old. FL9 485 was one of the oldest active road diesels on the roster at the time, and F59PHI was one of the newest. What were the odds of catching these two nose to nose?

The 485, seen here near the end of its life on Amtrak, is one of the last two FL9s active on the roster. The 485 and 486 were only used for protect and work train service at this point.

Amtrak FL9's were assigned to Albany for use between Albany and New York City for third rail operations into Grand Central. Every now and then one would make a run west of Albany to Niagara Falls.... (more)
